strengthening institutions

The original C.A.P.E. Strategy in 2000 identified actions to develop capable institutions, align their activities and improve conservation management and decision-making in the Cape Floristic Region. It proposed the co-ordination of effort, the development of an integrated information management strategy, partnership arrangements to improve efficiency and deal with key threats, and performance monitoring and review. Much of this work has happened through the partnership and its governance and co-ordination structures.

In addition, targeted interventions have occurred through the Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development project undertaken by the C.A.P.E. partnership from 2004-2009, with funding from the Global Environment Facility through the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme.

These interventions include:
  • a capacity development programme to build skills and develop conservation managers who are representative of the diversity of South African society
  • a learning network to capture and disseminate the lessons being learnt across the C.A.P.E. partnership
  • a spatial biodiversity information system to provide the knowledge support base for conservation activities
  • an institutional sustainability programme of work to ensure that partners have the resources to carry out their biodiversity conservation functions on a sustainable basis.

  • Supporting partner organizations to develop strategies to access project funding
