schools get career advice at fynbos forum
A career education workshop was presented to two high schools, Albert Myburgh Secondary and Bredasdorp High School in Bredasdorp during the Fynbos Forum on 5 August 2009. The workshop was initiated by Sharon Brink, chairperson of the Southern Overberg branch of the Botanical Society, and presented by the SA Environmental Observation Network (SAEON), in conjunction with SANParks and Cape Nature.
SAEON Fynbos Node Education Officer Hadley Lyners presented various options to Grade 10-11 learners – careers in conservation policy development, environmental law, conservation-related social development, environmental economics and various options located in the biophysical realm (e.g. marine biology, conservation biology, environmental design).
The presentations included 40 different options and 10 life messages on how scholars can approach their decisions about life. Lyners showed the learners the CAPE Careers in Conservation DVD, with each school receiving a copy of the DVD as well as copies of Africa Geographic magazine.
The workshop was coordinated by Alliston Appels from SANParks, with Edith Henn, Lesley-Ann Williams and Mortimar De Boer from Cape Nature also motivating the learners to consider a career in conservation. Learners were given the option to approach the team afterwards if they wanted to know more.
