The Nuwejaars Special Management Area (SMA) in the Overberg has recently released 39 bontebok donated by CapeNature and the Overberg Test Range. The Nuwejaars SMA also released 21 red hartebeest onto its conservation land. Hartebeest and bontebok became extinct in the Overberg in the 1800s through hunting. This initiative aims to reintroduce free-ranging populations of these species in the area, with hippo, eland and mountain zebra to follow.
